Edina War Memorial Hospital

WAR MEMORIAL HOSPITAL TOURS

Meeting at the Birrell Street entrance to the War Memorial Hospital, the tour will explore the grounds and buildings including the Chapel and Edina.

In 1864, Ebenezer Vickery built the first house in Georgian style and called Edina, a contraction of Edinburgh, where his wife, Jane was born. After twenty years the house was demolished and a two storey mansion with tower was built in 1884. Edina has a central front door and is encased in an elaborately moulded cement two storey verandah of arcaded Italianate design with projecting entrance porch and central tower accessible as a flat observation post.

The Nellie Vickery Chapel was donated by the Vickery family in 1932.

The tour will commence at 10am and conclude with morning tea on the first floor in Edina.

Waverley Park & Oval Tour

Join us for a history tour of Waverley Park on Thursday, 18th May at 10 am outside Waverley Council Chambers in Bondi Road.

From Flagstaff Farm to Chinese market gardens to Waverley Park in 1880, the area has undergone many changes. The story of Waverley Oval, the reservoirs, the sporting facilities and the Soldier’s Memorial give us an insight into life in 19th century and early 20th century in Waverley.
